About the Position

Sobotec is currently seeking a Structural Design Engineer with previous experience in the façade / building envelope design industry. The Structural Design Engineer’s main role will include the completion of engineering design calculations for various panel systems used on projects throughout Canada and the United States. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the R&D and Engineering Manager, and is a self-motivated fast learner with a desire to continuously grow and improve.

Consideration may also be given to exceptionally qualified candidates who are expecting their P.Eng. licence within the next year. They will be tasked with additional responsibilities of collaborating with and mentoring junior team members (both locally and in Europe), sharing their preferred approaches to finding solutions to complex façade design problems and the review and seal of shop drawings for projects located in Ontario (or any other province that candidate may be registered).

Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Master’s degree from accredited institution with a focus in Structural Engineering.
  • Previous experience working in the curtain wall / façade industry or architectural products industry is an asset.
  • Previous design experience utilizing light gauge steel and/or aluminum materials.
  • Ability to solve linear-static structural engineering problems both by hand and using software.
  • Proficiency with structural design software, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with finite element analysis and Solidworks 3D design software.
  • Working knowledge of design codes and standards used for curtain wall design in the United States (IBC, ASCE 7, NASPEC, ADM, etc) and Canada (NBCC, NASPEC, CSA S157, etc).
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to conceptualize structural and architectural details in three dimensions.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare engineering design calculations based on the building and design codes relevant to the project’s location.
  • For projects in the United States, liaise with local consulting companies to ensure Sobotec project documents (drawings and calculations) will be sealed by consultant registered in project’s jurisdiction.
  • Communicate engineering design requirements for each project to drafting team to ensure projects are drawn and detailed adequately.
  • Conduct shop inspections of fabricated panels to ensure conformance with engineering design requirements.
  • Manage multiple ongoing projects at a time.
  • Aid in the development of new panel and façade systems that must balance a number of competing interests (structural, thermal, moisture protection, fire propagation, economical, ease of installation, etc) if required.
  • Plan the testing of new and existing systems at 3rd party laboratories if required.
